Send Love to Philippines
Super Typhoon Goni, the world’s strongest storm of the year 2020, had made a landfall in the Philippines on 1 November. The category 5 typhoon had struck the island with high speed destructive winds and torrential rains that caused flooding and triggered landslides which devastated the lives of 2 million people and left thousands of houses destroyed.
A disaster assessment was launched by Tzu Chi volunteers in Batangas on 3 November, followed by a two-day cash for work programme to drive locals to clean up and restore their community. The residents had also received further cash assistance from Tzu Chi to repair their homes. After completing the relief mission in Batangas, Tzu Chi volunteers moved on to the more severely affected Province of Albay on the 5th to launch the second cash for relief operation.
Before things were back to normal in the aftermath of Typhoon Goni, the country was slammed by another category 4 typhoon named Typhoon Vamco on 13 November. This time flooding the capital city Manila. Hot meals were delivered by Tzu Chi volunteers to towns where there was a power outage. On the following day, another cash for work programme was initiated to remove the muds before it dried up.
A cash relief of 1,000 pesos per person is twice the average daily salary for the locals. The cash handout is more than just a token of appreciation for their labor, but also a form of encouragement for them to rebuild their homeland.
In the Philippines where 80% of the population are Catholics, further cash relief were handed out with the hope of helping more than 9,000 families to prepare for Christmas celebration. Behind these gestures are the sincere blessings from Master Cheng Yen and Tzu Chi volunteers around the world.
When disaster occurs, help comes from all directions.
It is a greater challenge to provide disaster relief amid a pandemic.
